This Site May Harm Your Computer

May 10, 2007

The Ghost In The Browser: Analysis of Web-based Malware (pdf) describes how Google is leveraging their overwhelming search dominance to combat browser malware installations. In a blog entry last summer, Matt Cutts said:

Given how much I hate web pages that install malicious software or abuse browser security holes, I'd like it if we did even more to protect our users.

Apparently, they've done even more to protect users since then. Here's a Google search result tagged with the ominous warning "This site may harm your computer":

Search results page with an entry tagged 'this site may harm your computer'

Clicking "This site may harm your computer" leads to a Google support page. Attempting to click through to the actual website results in an interstitial warning, offering no way to click through:

Warning - vsiting this site may harm your computer!

I think this is a fairly effective method of warning away most rational users from a clearly evil website. Of course, users who desire whatever media, software, or pornography the site is hawking can still type the URL in their address bar. Users will find a way to see the dancing bunnies if they really, really want to, no matter how many warnings and barriers you blast in front of them.

If you want to see what's behind that URL, fair warning: in addition to being outright dangerous for a machine that's not patched to the gills, it's NSFW in a big way. A little investigation showed that it's doing the following:

  • Attempts to use the remote data services ActiveX control.
  • Shows a spoof HTML page with the text "windows media player cannot play video file; Click here to download missing Video ActiveX object". The download runs setup.exe.
  • Runs Javascript with exploit sniffing code.

If you accept that Google wields the immense power of being the de-facto start page for the internet, then maybe this kind of policing effort comes with the territory. To do nothing-- to let these purely evil sites show up in Google results with no warning whatsoever-- would be irresponsible. Although a person might be performing questionable searches to get this page in their results, it's irrelevant. Despite the individual ethics of the person using that one computer, a compromised computer will be used for attacks and spam against everyone.

Still, I'm a little curious. Why does Google deploy the ultimate weapon of search delisting on sites using black-hat SEO techniques to game search rankings, while known evil malware sites get stern warning interstitials instead? I brought up the Google result by doing a direct search on the domain name. The very same search produces no results on live.com or ask.com. Clearly that site has been delisted by everyone except Google. The domain still has a PageRank of four. I applaud the effort, but what value does keeping a site like that in your search index have for users?

Even if your web site is not evil, it's possible for others to inject malicious code into your page if you're not careful. The Google whitepaper provides three external vectors that can turn a good web page to the dark side:

  • Compromised webservers can insert malicious code into all HTML pages served
  • Pages which allow user-contributed HTML, where the HTML hasn't been properly sanitized
  • The use of questionable advertising content, or compromised ad servers

It's scary how many ways this can happen. I strongly urge you to read the whitepaper to get all the gory details.

Google's paper says one in ten webpages contains malicious code. The most direct way to address malware delivered via web pages is to increase the security of the operating system and the browser, so "drive-by downloads" cannot happen without the user's explicit consent. But a problem as large as malware should be attacked on multiple fronts. Search engines are in a unique position to help index and identify malicious webpages, and prevent them from being accessible in search results. It's encouraging to read about Google's architecture for automatically identifying malicious URLs. I don't think it's fair to call this Google policing the web; it's just good, ethical business to filter out the evil.

Wow...I'm so glad I stumbled on this page via Yahoo cause all my Google searched come up with the same 'This site may harm your computer.' I was thinking that I had a virus, but I'm guessing since everyone else has the same problem, then we're all in the same potentially virus-free boat.

Katrina on January 31, 2009 6:56 AM

Probably a disgruntled worker that got a big paycheck cut. Frugal Google!

Steve on January 31, 2009 6:56 AM

I did a Google search for Google, and the result for http://www.google.com/ said This site may harm your computer. What gives? Google itself harms my computer?

Tim on January 31, 2009 6:56 AM

I suppose google.ie could lead to harmful to your computer. You could search 'I want to fucking destroy my computer with a virus'. Thanks for the heads up, google. I'm throwing my laptop in the bin.

David on January 31, 2009 6:56 AM

Yes, it seems we are all having the same issue... but has anyone found out exactly what is going on? Anyone in the US called, emailed google for example?

Ren on January 31, 2009 6:56 AM

Woooooooah!!!

Aah!

Finally....

Thought that my blogs have been marked unsafe cz I use Alexa widget (site marked unsafe by mcafee) till I realised like many people here that google has marked itself harmful as well. The explanation page for the This site may harm your computer. seems to have crashed and is showing a 502.

One of those days you actually feel glad others are having this same problem.

AS on January 31, 2009 6:57 AM

Google is in a recession. They are cutting all costs...

The Economist on January 31, 2009 6:57 AM

So wtf is going on.. ?!
I thought I had a malware/spyware/virus invasion but it's happened to all the computers in the house :(

Any ideas?

Maddy on January 31, 2009 6:57 AM

Ben on January 31, 2009 6:57 AM

ROFL stop panicking it's only been happening for like 17 minutes and you can still access all the websites by just saying you want to continue.

Mr on January 31, 2009 6:58 AM

This is hilarious. I'm wondering what the explanation is going to be!

Gav on January 31, 2009 6:58 AM

What morons! Let's see the Google stock price go down. And what about Digg??? Such a useful site for what's hot - bunch of dweebs duking it out over Battlestar Galactica, no mention that the internet's biggest company is having a temporary but all-inclusive meltdown

kingfelix on January 31, 2009 6:58 AM

I did a Google search for Google, and the result for Google for said This site may harm your computer. What gives? Google itself harms my computer?

Thank God! I thought it was just my computer. Great job Google, that is a new way to fight viruses.

Nick from NJ on January 31, 2009 6:58 AM

Of course, Google.com itself may harm your computer!

kingfelix on January 31, 2009 6:58 AM

I can't search google!! All sites say: This site can harm your computer. HELP REQUIRED!!

Hmmmm on January 31, 2009 6:59 AM

Wow. Google are obviously having a very bad day. This won't be easy to live down although I'm sure in a few months this will all be forgotten. But for the moment Google would seem to be doing their very best to divert their users to other search engines.

Chris Barnes on January 31, 2009 6:59 AM

WHY?

every page is harmful, malware.

Are they advertising for StopBadware.org ? or what?

We should all sue google, because they are misleading us? isn't it time the billions they make get spread around ?

jalil on January 31, 2009 6:59 AM

Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo, MSN....all marked harmful!!!

wtf....

Google getting temporary dementia with all those pages stored??

AS on January 31, 2009 6:59 AM

This must be a bug on google's search engine. It was working fine this morning until I began see all search listings with this warning and the worst think is that it doesn't let you enter.

same problem here

tom on January 31, 2009 7:01 AM

Albert Mond on January 31, 2009 7:01 AM

The problem is still not resolved.

Mike P on January 31, 2009 7:01 AM

I came across this problem by chance today. I thought it was wierd, and guessed I'd installed something by accident (and I am a power user)...

Either google has made an almighty cockup, or we have all been victims of an as yet undiscovered worm/trojan/hack/malware installation.

Keep posting guys. I am going to write to the BBC and Newspapers to get this as widely known as possible... its tantamount to the world grinding to a halt... and is costing companies BILLIONS RIGHT NOW AT THIS VERY MOMENT. Google had better undo what they've done or they are going to find themselves on the end of the biggest class suit in the last hundred years.

Daniel Prince on January 31, 2009 7:01 AM

this is uber weird though... i thought avira was messing up lol

Google has been removed as my home page. Can't trust it! I wonder how much of their company's value will eventually have been destroyed by this bug.

T on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

Oh thank God! I was worried I got my poor Mac sick 'coz I googled something just now and suddenly every hit was tagged as potentially harmful to my machine.

Tried it on my PC and got the same result. Figured it must be a problem with the search engine itself so I googled it (and yes this very site was also tagged as harmful) and hey presto! Reassurance that my machine's working just fine.

Good to know, good to know. Time to migrate over to another search engine and wait this annoyance out. ^_^

Kai on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

I wonder how many comments this post will end up with... (so far I see ~5 new comments on every refresh)

kangax on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

how come it's only on searches for controversial sites like Rex 84?

george on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

I am so happy I found this. I was literally about to faint. One thing I noticed. When you click on the sponsored links, or google ads that works fine, but the same sites in the regular search results don't. Could this be a conspiracy over at google to get people to spend money on their ads? I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but this really f___ed up!

David on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

Honestly it is hilarious but of course google can fruck up now and again. Just shows how much people can rely on one company and how that can be a bad thing. Personally I love a good catastrophe... though I'd hardly call this one lmao.

Mr on January 31, 2009 7:03 AM

how come it's only on searches for controversial sites like Rex 84?

george on January 31, 2009 7:04 AM

Same problem here. Thought it was computer at first. Must be Google. Interesting thing, though. All the listed search results have the This same may harm your computer message, BUT ... all the PAID Sponsored (ad) Links at the top and on the right have no such message and click through just fine.

How did I get here? From Web Crawler.
How did I get to Web Crawler? By searching on search engines in Google and then clicking Web Crawler link, which came up as one of the Sponsored Links !!! HA!

I hope Google gets this problem fixed fast! Or its market share will start going down very rapidly!

Lorayne on January 31, 2009 7:04 AM

Lol... this is kinda funny. we might have to go back to actually entering in the website we want to go to *gasp*
But I do admit, I thought I had some weird malware that was doing it to the Google site. Guess I'm not the only one. At least it was just Google :)

Johnny on January 31, 2009 7:05 AM

Google blocks access to their own site with This Site May Harm Your Computer. First time I saw this behaivor was 1/30/2009 at 10am. The last Web site I successfully visted on the evening of 1/29 was the National Assessment of Educational Progress. There have been no configuration changes. Why is this occurring all of a sudden?

urguess on January 31, 2009 7:05 AM

George, it's the same for every single search result (including Google.com).

Can't even get onto my online bank without getting this warning! Even Google themselves are warning us that their site may harm our computers!!!!!! djh

David on January 31, 2009 7:08 AM

BTW - It doesn't matter what you search on. Searching on innocent phrases like search engines or adobe acrobat have the same problem. You still get the This site may harm your computer message, even with the most prestigious and harmless websites, like Adobe.com. When I saw that, I was like .. what? Adobe.com is evil? (well some people may think that they're evil in that their software is really overpriced, but in my business you can't live without it, unfortunately).

Charlie on January 31, 2009 7:08 AM

I bet Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, Hotbot, Lycos, etc are getting lots of hits right now since everyone is searching for alternative search engines.

Susie on January 31, 2009 7:08 AM

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the yahoo hacking google comment above

c on January 31, 2009 7:08 AM

This really sucks! Every site in the world apparently is unsafe--including Spybot: Search Destroy's safer-networking--just to pick one out of a zillion. However, the hits listed at the top of the page which are from the baddest of the fake Spybot's, the ones that actually put spyware on your computer is safe because they're paid ads for Google. I guess my Googling days are over and I'm going to have to use MSN or some other non-google search engine.

So long!

colin on January 31, 2009 7:10 AM

Don't bother contacting the BBC - there site may harm your computer according to Google. In fact the For more information about how to protect yourself from harmful software online, you can visit StopBadware.org. is a bit useless because it may harm your computer according to Google too. My main site learnenglish.de might too, which is a bit of a bummer, because I'm not clever enough to hack anyone.

Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to simply click to continue, but in the meantime to prevent the world grinding to a halt you can simply cut and paste the web address result directly into your browser, or use a different search engine till they sort this out.

Lynne Hand on January 31, 2009 7:10 AM

Google hacked?, Code from laid off employee? Yahoo behind this?
Does anyone hear the sirens going of at google?
