Secretly, We're All Geeks

Scott Hanselman was kind enough to sing the praises of my blog a few months ago, completely unprompted. I finally met Scott in person at TechEd this year, and I can assure you that if you suck, Scott will be the first person to tell you that you suck.* That's how he rolls, ese. So getting a thumbs up from Mr. Hanselman is hard-earned praise indeed, and I do appreciate it.

In the fine tradition of paying it forward, I want to pass on similar kudos to one of my favorite blogs-- Leon Bambrick's secretGeek.

Sure, there may be other blogs out there by authors who are better writers, or who have killer technical chops, but Leon is all that stuff, and he's consistently funny, too. And not in an uncomfortable, soul-baring, More Than I Needed To Know Rory Blythe kind of way, or in the highly unfortunate I Can't Believe This Passes For Humor way of User Friendly.

Secretly, we may all be geeks-- but very few geeks are as talented at walking the fine line of technical comedy as Mr. Leon Bambrick. It's all funny because it's all true. Take a few minutes to read through his archives and you'll see what I mean.

* But in an amusing way, so you'll laugh at how much you suck, too. ;)

Amen, Jeff. I've been an adict to Leon's blog for more than a year now, and one of the things that amazes me the most of the guy is his way of throwing off great ideas for great would-be applications (like TimeSnapper, for example) as if it was nothing.

Yeah Jeff, your blog rocks for the amount of effort you put into it, and Leon definitely is very funny!

One of my fav entries from his blog -

Settle down holmes :)

From the link Kay provided:

Unless five hundred people read this article, I have failed. Unless thirty people leave comments, I have failed. Unless it is linked to by forty other blogs, I have failed. Unless it is still being linked to by other blogs in six months' time, I have failed. Unless it is so brilliant that I am spontaneously contacted by Penguin publishing, who beg me to convert the article into a short and satirical self-help book that goes on to sell six million copies, then I have failed. And failed bitterly. I really suck. I do.

LOL, great stuff.

oh boy, i'm having a genuine Sally Fields moment here. Thank you Jeff!

Great stuff as always, Jeff. Thanks, I've added some new feeds to my daily fix.

As for Rory getting his panties in a wad over your comments, there are many of us who agree with you: Rory is a good writer, but the details of his personal life aren't nearly as interesting as he sometimes thinks they are.

Or maybe I'm just saying that because I have deep-rooted insecurity that prevents me from giving unconditional praise to others. Man, Rory's going to put a lot of poor starving shrinks out of jobs!

Doug

"Man, Rory's going to put a lot of poor starving shrinks out of jobs!"

???

I actually keep their lights on.

"As for Rory getting his panties in a wad over your comments"

I've taken that post down. Until I know for certain whether Jeff was trying to insult me or he, like you, can't do the "compliment without negative qualification" thing, I'm going to leave it down.

Rory on July 1, 2006 1:11 PM

Rory, I didn't get to read that before you took it down. I think you're an amazing and highly entertaining writer, with a lot of great insights.

Now I have to pry it out of the Google cache..

"Rory, I didn't get to read that before you took it down. I think you're an amazing and highly entertaining writer, with a lot of great insights."

Oh, crap.

I thought you were actually thinking that I was a good writer who sucked.

Glad I took that post down...

Jesus. I'm sorry.

It's just that, with the way you phrased it, I got the wrong idea.

Rory on July 1, 2006 3:41 PM

Well, the main difference between you and Leon is that I can laugh at Leon's writing without feeling dirty and complicit in his personal life. ;)

Jeff Atwood on July 1, 2006 7:47 PM

i would've loved to have seen rory's rant.

Well, here it is:

Why do people do this? I'm talking about you, Jeff Atwood...
By Rory on Enter the Nerd

Here’s the deal.

Jeff Atwood over at Coding Horror recently put up a post in which he talked about how much he digs Leon Bambrick. I can relate – I’ve been a fan of Leon for years.

But, in his praise, Jeff says:

Leon is all that stuff, and he's consistently funny, too. And not in an uncomfortable, soul-baring, More Than I Needed To Know Rory Blythe kind of way

What’s the point of this?

Aydika and I have had this discussion on many occasions. Neither one of us can understand why, when someone praises one thing, he will then, almost instinctively, slam something else. I understand that one thing can’t have value unless there’s something to which it is compared, but that doesn’t mean you have to say it. It’s OK to keep some thoughts inside your head.

What’s wrong with appreciating something based on its own merits? Why does it have to be turned into a Thing One vs. Thing Two scenario?

Isn’t it possible to like Leon without trashing me?

It’s this same kind of thinking that breeds zealotry. The “I like Linux, so I guess I’ll have to trash Windows” mindset. It’s what makes slashdot an incubator of stupidity.

Not impressed. I’m especially irritated because I’ve always felt a sort of kinship with Leon. I think I once called him the “funnier, non-American version of me.” I don’t need someone drawing a line between us for absolutely no good reason.

I can say that I love Leon’s writing, and I don’t need to trash Jeff in the process. Here – watch:

I love Leon’s writing.

See how easy that was?

That’s your lesson in tact for the day, Jeff. And, when you’re getting tact lessons from Rory Blyth, you’re in need of some serious help.

If you want to slam me, that’s fine. But don’t slam me to make one of my acquaintances look good. It’s insulting to me, and Leon certainly doesn’t need it – he’s doing just fine on his own.
