Spawned a New Process

Back in September 2008, I mentioned that we were spawning a new process. Well, that process arrived today, and its id is Henry Burton Atwood.

We're starting him off right with a little light reading.

Henry Burton Atwood (aka Rockhard Awesome) meets the C++ Gui Programming Guide

You may recognize this book from Apple's Mac vs PC ad series, specifically, the "Gift Exchange" Mac vs PC ad.

frame from Apple's 'Gift Exchange' Get a Mac ad, showing the C++ GUI Programming Guide book

Because, truly, what better gift is there for a newborn than the C++ GUI Programming Guide? Watch the ad to see what I mean. "I've been eyeing that myself."

All credit for creation of this new process of course goes to my wife Betsy who did the real work. I now truly understand the meaning of the classic Bill Cosby skit on childbirth.

Helping my wife walk the pain scale, going from pain level 7/10, 8/10 and then seeing the maw of darkness that lies at pain scale 10/10 and beyond, was quite an experience. How much pain? Well, imagine the worst pain you've ever experienced. Now imagine taking that pain, packing it in to a rickety Oldsmobile, setting it on fire, then driving it off the edge of a cliff at maximum speed. Into a valley filled with white-hot molten lava.

It's a little bit worse than that.

You may have heard that childbirth is a mystical, spiritual process. The thing that ties every human being together as one long continuous string of life, extending all the way back to the beginning of time. To a point, it is. As my friend Phil said, it's all ponies and butterflies. Until the ponies and butterflies start spontaneously screaming. But, it was all worth it to get Henry, who is genetically engineered to be awesome. Being a geek from birth, Henry has his own Twitter account, which was opened with exactly the first message you'd expect:

Rockhard Awesome: my first Twitter message, 'hello world'

Hello World. Literally.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, I'm sure you know I will approach our new parenting adventure the same way I do programming -- with absolutely no freaking idea what I'm doing. And often hilarious results.

Here's to you, little guy, and every other little programmer being born around the world.

Jeff,

Have you read "The Happiest Baby on the Block" yet? If not get it, and hopefully it will work for you like it did for us. The strategies in there don't everyone, but are like magic when they do.

Congratulations too.

Lucas mentioned the exceptions and core dumps. Good advice, but you really need to be ready for the buffer overruns and, er, stack overflows he's going to produce. Keep everything washable, and wash everything often.

Help your wife recover, then get on with enjoying your time together with Henry.

I was actually thinking about your old post the other day, wondering why you hadn't followed up on it and hoping that nothing bad had happened. I find it a bit distressing that I go around thinking about your (then) unborn since I don't have any contact with you, but I guess that parenthood (I have two daughters) can do that to you. :-)

Congratulations and good luck to the three of you!

As a father of three, where the oldest is now leaving the nest, I'll give you this advice (as others already have):

Spend as much time as you can with your children. The first years never come back, so make sure that you have your priorities straight! Just when you start to know your children, they're flying away!

Having said which, have you thought of starting another blog for personal stuff? It's not that it doesn't interest me - rather the contrary - but I fear that you'll hold back from talking baby here as its supposed to be a "tech" blog.

Congrats, Jeff!

A newborn is like a computer booting up for the first time. It has some BIOS routines built-in, but that's already it. No operating system, no applications. The interesting thing is, the OS doesn't need to be installed, it is "copied by observation". Each adult has already a running OS and children copy these OS functions, one by one, by just observing how the OS of the adult works. A computer that programs itself by just monitoring how the OS on another computer works - what a great concept. Of course the observation and copy code is already in the BIOS.

Additionally to that OS, that is copied anyway, you as a parent can perform further programming, though you cannot just tell what to do as on a PC. You can only "encourage" something to happen... sometimes something will happen randomly out of nowhere... in either case you can later on reward or punish the system. Behavior rewarded will get established within the system, behavior punished will vanish of the system (though occasionally break through again). And hurry up on doing that, as the older the child gets, the FLASH memory becomes more and more of a ROM that cannot be changed anymore (it's like a Flash with unlimited amount of possible reads, but very limited amount of possible writes).

At the age of 12 to 14 the OS will further develop a strong firewall that is going to drop 80% of all your input and the 20% that goes through are stored in the Trash folder and only if you are lucky get restored from there on time before the Trash is emptied.

:-D

Herr_Alien on March 13, 2009 4:27 AM

Congratulation!

Ah, young parents ... Please note that the first computers that Henry is going to program are his parents' brains. In a very short time, he'll master the set of commands needed to provide him with nutrition, songs, massage, blanket, and even frustrated tears ... I mean, error message. And amazingly, he discovered all that without a single manual, just good old trial and error. Beat that C++!

Enjoy the journey, fellow parent!

Paulus Lahur on March 13, 2009 4:34 AM

@Paulus Lahur

Very true. Some programming parents foolishly think that they are programming the child, and all the while the child is programming them.

Cool. I had to go and work straight after both of mine were born. Stay as close as you can - you won't regret it.

The second one comes much easier, or at least he appeared to to me!

The first one is off to Siberia with the girl guides this summer. Where did the last 16 years go?

Savour every moment you can get with your wife and child, I missed the first years of both of my kids because I was on the road. You will never get that back, so make sure you have it. Take lots of photographs.

It's an adventure. Even after 16 years for me. Enjoy it.

RE Childbirth pain. According to one woman I know, gallstones are worse than childbirth. The both hurt in the same KIND of way, trying to put something too big through a tube that is too small. I will tell you that gallstones (and kidney stones) HURT, and they can give you drugs for that that they can't safely give a woman in childbirth

Hey Jeff, there seem to be a lot of programmers procreating recently, myself included. How about a spinoff of stackoverflow for parenting questions? (In that context, a stack overflow is a much different, and much smellier, kind of thing.)

Gray Fox,
I love Tikki Tikki Tembo too! It seems like very few people seem to know it outside of my family, so I'm amused you know it too. I believe the version you referenced calls him "Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Chari Bari Ruchi Pip Peri Pembo" or something on that order. I've also heard "Tikki Tooki Timbo no si nimbo bui hui bushi fui pom pom niki nomi acko fui-o." I guess there are myriad versions, and I have fun trying to remember them. :-)

That little guy looks like a keeper! Best of luck to your growing family.

As a father of two little girls I can attest to the fact that I was not properly prepared for how simultaneously thrilling and disgusting childbirth really is. But all the gore was forgotten when the nurses put my twin girls in my arms. Ten years later, it's been the most educational experience I've ever had.

Like many of the others have said, enjoy all of it. Miss nothing. Be there for every game, play, recital, etc. no matter what the career sacrifice. You'll never regret it. I haven't.

Deb on March 13, 2009 1:53 PM

Congratulations to you and the wife Jeff!

I do have to put a slight downer on this comment, though. I'm sure you know this already but I just want to comment that one needs to be very careful about sort of expectations can be set even this early on, even unintentionally. If it turns out that he really doesn't want to be a programmer or even involved with IT at all it could make for a very secretly unhappy upbringing.

I have never been a parent, but I have been a child.

Best of luck to you all. I have heard that parenting is one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences a human can have.

Leo on March 13, 2009 2:19 PM

One thing, you sound like a cliche dad who kinda forces his child into following his footsteps. I'm a geek, and proud of it, but everyone should choose their own path.

What if henry turns out to be a jock with no interest whatsoever in computing.

I think the goal of parenting is to raise a good person.

Anyway, I'm just rambling. Whatever happens, I give you my best wishes

It will be interesting to see if your spawned process actually takes any interesting in programming. I couldn't even get my kid to take an interest in programming with real life Karl the Robot through LEGO Mindstorms. He's a luser to the core.

I hope yours doesn't fit the same mold, because what are people going to do when they're as computer-dependent as they're going to be, but all of us true geeks are long dead?

I'm bored waiting for family to show up (flight was delayed), so I made a nerdy character class. Would you believe I've never actually played D&D except for a couple Bioware games?

Henry Burton Atwood
Level 0 Human Offspring
STR: 1
CON: 1
DEX: 1
WIS: 18 (wisdom of children)
INT: 1 (unable to talk implies less-than-3)
CHA: 20 when content, -1 for every consecutive minute that it is not entirely satisfied with life. Returns to 20 the instant it becomes contented again.

Spells:
Banshee's wail (at will until level 3, 2/day until level 10)
Charm person (at will until level 10)
Cloudkill (50 / day until level 5)
Geas (only targetable on mother, father)

Offspring gains one level per year regardless of XP, until level 18.

Offspring will gain one point of STR, CON, DEX, and INT at a rate of 1 point per level for 3 + 2d6 levels.

At level 3, WIS will be reduced to 4 and increase at a rate of 1 point per level for 2d6 levels.

After 4 levels, Offspring will lose CHA at the rate of 1 point per level for 6 + 2d6 levels, then regain charisma for 1d6 levels. Furthermore, beginning at this point the time before application of CHA penalty doubles but the penalty quadruples. So a level 4 Offspring takes 1 minutes for a 1 CHA penalty, a level 5 Offspring takes 2 minutes for a 4 CHA penalty, a level 6 Offspring takes 4 minutes for a 16 CHA penalty, and so on. The Charisma cooldown rate increases at a rate of 1 hour per level -- so after 2 hours of unbroken contentedness, a level 6 Offspring will lose all CHA penalties. At levels 13 through 16, Offspring cannot become content.

At level 4, Offspring gains Tasha's Hideous Laughter (at will). Loses it at level 10.

At level 13, Offspring may multiclass without XP penalty. The combined level is used to calculate current primary stats and spells.

Offspring's alignment must be any Evil from level 1 through level 4, inclusive. Offspring's aligment must be any Chaotic from level 13 through level 18, inclusive.

Taking classes in Offspring comes at a 10% XP penalty for every level beyond the 18th.

When my son was born 8 months ago, I couldn't believe how true the statement of "it will be different when it is your own kid" was.

I had the same experience you had about how blue the sky seemed the first time I went out of the hospital afterward. Everything is different -- it fluctuates from being much brighter than it ever had been before, to being darker at times, too. The ups and downs of being a parent, I guess.

One thing I've noticed is that since becoming a parent, I'm MUCH less judgmental. You want to breastfeed your kid until he's 5? Whatever. Not my kid. Everyone has advice, and I'm sure it works for their kid. But I've found that the best course of action is the one I deem appropriate after spending countless hours upon hours with him, and he's a happy healthy little boy, so I think I'm doing it right.

I'm sure you guys will to. Congratulations, and Henry, the world says "hello!" back!

Congratulations you guys, its both magical and terrifying at the same time - the kid will have root access to you and he is something of a noob, so stuff will go wrong. I found that most of the time you end up laughing at the clever solutions kids come up with when they are confronted with problems.

It does get frustrating when they get stuck in an endless loop though: "why?...why?...why?..."

On the other hand, the feeling you get when you realise that you are the coolest, strongest, most amazing person in his world and you can even do magic tricks, is incredible. He will love his mum, but you will be his dad and - for a while at least - no one can top that. Enjoy it.

Congratulations Jeff!

BTW, I'm a C++ programmer and I particularly don't like GUI programming myself -- which is why I stick with server-side system-level applications.

At any rate, enjoy being a father -- I believe it's one of the greatest gifts a man can ever receive.

Pat Morrison on March 14, 2009 9:02 AM

Congratulations Jeff, may you have many happy experiences together! :D Don't push programming and computers on him though, chances are he'll chose something completely opposite of what you want anyway...

Stian on March 14, 2009 9:48 AM

Congrats!!

Just wait until you have two or more process going at once, and the older one thinks it has a higher priority....oh man.

Or both processes do something unexpected and say that it's from lack of memory..but no need to get angry, dad, let's reboot and forget about it:)

I remember when my first process spawned. My project collaborator was switching out a smelly drive, when, while not covering over the USB port, became the target of the processes self-inflicted defrag - ewww.

And like Stian said, take it steady and don't push...while he may go the opposite way of you as far as learning and job, know this one thing - no matter how opposite nor similar he may be from you, in his mind and heart, you'll always his be his hero.

Congrats to you both!

Jeff-
I have to say- I've been following your blog and the quality of posts has been declining. Please stop posting about dragons, unicorns, opensource, NP complete, babies, and things you don't understand... you're supposed to be a professional.

You need at least ONE of these comments every blog post... right? ;)

Congratulations, Jeff. My wife and I had our inaugural baby deployment a little over six months ago (http://scottonlife.com/solblog/archive/2008/09/10/and-then-there-were-three.aspx) and, like most first-time parents, are learning as we go and having a blast. My one word of wisdom: the first three months are hard and tiring, but rest assured that it does get a heckuva lot easier once they find a good sleep schedule and become more interactive.

I expect that you've already downloaded and installed BabySmash? :-)

Every child that comes is a blessing from God. Rearing him up is hard, yet will deliver you both enormous satisfaction. Remember also that children are really only borrowed, not yours: the moment he will walk away to start his own adventure in life may look incredibly far away from now, but will come faster than you'd expect.

So enjoy every moment!

I once remember reading an article where the writer made a joke about his subject, a famous computer scientist, moving from the world of digital creations to the ultimate analog creation with the birth of his first child. That bothered me, because DNA replication is definitely a digital process, not an analog one."Spawning a new process" is -- by far-- a much better metaphor.

Congratulations, Jeff. You'll never find disruptive context switching more enjoyable than in the form of raising a child.

It's a little known fact that America is the feminised version of "Amerigo" (all continents are feminised - a Latin tradition). "Amerigo" is the Itallian man who discovered the American continent (Amerigo Vespuchie). Amerigo is the masculine Itallian of Americ - from the the German Heinrich. In English Heinrich is known as Henry. So America is litterally "Henry land". And now there's one more Henry in Henry land.

Just a word of warning though - there are some crazies out there. Be careful about how much information you give out on your family and location. There's nothing worse than a predator knowing where your child will be, what they look like, their name and their interests.

Do you mean to say that to transfer data successfully, you do not need to pick up one computer and shove it on the other?
Come one, we knew this long long ago, or did we?

Also, I wonder about all the joys of Kid.Exceptional.Raise()
First you will teach him to C#
Then you will him er... lang?
No, you wouldn't like him to C++, since he is J++
Now what's the J++ angle actually? K-DE? Linux? Rebellion!?!?
And how are you going to /(root) for Microsoft(TM) products when he(nry) will immerse himself wholly in going Ga-ga over goo-goo ?!?!?
I bet you didn't think of all this. :-)

a little bit advice to prove your/his geekiness more. if your son is old enough to be able to hold a keyboard, perhaps you should try to give him his own keyboard :D, see how he'll respond.
